Colon cancer prevention

Colon cancer (Colorectal carcinoma)

Colorectal carcinoma, or colon cancer, is one of the most common forms of cancer in the Czech Republic. Approximately 8,000 new cases of this cancer are diagnosed annually, and around 4,000 patients die from its consequences each year. These statistics highlight the high prevalence and severity of colorectal cancer, making early diagnosis and prevention critical for improving patient outcomes.

Goal of the screening program

The screening program, organized and overseen by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic, aims to detect cancer in asymptomatic individuals—those who do not yet show signs or symptoms of the disease. This program is free for all Czech citizens over the age of 50, and its primary goal is to reduce the mortality rate from colorectal cancer by identifying the disease in its early stages, when treatment is more effective and the chances of curing the cancer are significantly higher.

Screening methods

  1. Fecal occult blood test (FOBT):
This test is used to detect hidden (occult) blood in the stool, which may be an early sign of colon cancer. The blood is not always visible to the naked eye but can be present in microscopic amounts, which are detectable through the test. If the test shows a positive result, further examination, such as a colonoscopy, is recommended to confirm the presence of cancer or other conditions.
  2. Primary screening colonoscopy:
If the FOBT yields a positive result, or if other indications arise, patients are recommended to undergo a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is an invasive procedure where the doctor uses a long, flexible tube (colonoscope) to inspect the inner lining of the colon and rectum. During this procedure, any tumors or polyps can be detected, and biopsies (tissue samples) can be taken for histological examination, which is essential for diagnosing the disease.

Importance of early diagnosis

Early diagnosis of colorectal cancer significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and cure. When tumors in the colon are detected in their early stages, they can be effectively removed surgically, possibly accompanied by adjuvant treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which greatly improve the patient’s prognosis. In contrast, advanced stages, where the tumor has spread to surrounding tissues or metastasized to distant organs, are much harder to treat, and the success rate of therapy is lower.

Availability of the program and how to participate

The screening program is available to all citizens of the Czech Republic aged 50 and older. It is essential that anyone in this age group regularly undergo the tests and examinations provided by the program to ensure early detection of potential diseases. If you have not yet heard about the screening program or have not been informed about it, we recommend contacting your general practitioner or gastroenterologist, who will provide detailed information about participating in the program and recommend specific tests.

Accreditation of our center

Our center is accredited by the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic as a specialized center for colorectal cancer screening. This means that we offer expert and high-quality care within this program, covering diagnosis, prevention, and subsequent treatment. Our goal is to ensure timely and accurate diagnostic procedures, which can significantly contribute to improving patient prognosis and reducing mortality from this serious disease.
